Protest Cable Call 2011

Protest Cable Call 2011 Recap

foto verslag

Nice!

Jeroen is jarig

Hiep hiep rahoe! Gefeliciteerd!

Kwart over party time

Vanaf nu aan wij zullen schrijven in the Nederlands

Winners of the Protest Cable Call 2011

Clint Liddy on the mic

We had a short conversation with Clint Liddy, one of the two speakers at the Protest Cable Call.

Clint, what do you think of the past two days?
It was very well organised. Protest did an outstanding job putting an event like this together. The level of the riders was crazy, the conditions were good, there was a great crowd, working with Lorenzo which is always fun... it was really good! Too bad the sun only showed up at the end of the weekend, haha.

See you next year?
For sure! I'm already looking forward to it.

More words with Mike McComb

We spoke again with Mike McComb, head judge at the WWA. This time we spoke some more about the Cable Call.

So Mike, again, what do you think of the event?
The event was really good. I like how well organised the whole event was. The music, the party, it all contributes to the right atmosphere. It's professional, yet creates a good atmosphere that fits the wakeboard lifestyle.

You've been doing this work for eighteen years and counting. What developments do you see in the wakeboard scene?
We used to have no obstacles, haha! That's a development for sure. The skill level is is also growing and growing, wakeboarding is a young sport and you see it progressing every year. Tricks get more technical all the time, just like other sports like snowboarding or freestyle motorcross. You'll get the picture. We're now heading to Amsterdam with a lot of boarders to have a great time, so see you later!

A few words with Mike McComb

Just after the Cable Call, we asked Mike McComb (chief judge at the WWA) for his comments on the event.

So Mike, what do you think of the event?
The event was really good.

Thanks for your answer. We'll catch up later!

Allright, this was a bit hectic and we couldn't write all tricks down, so sorry about that...

Finals Pro Women
    1    Kirsteen Mitchell    UK
Kirsteen fell in her run and picked up at the third turn. Tailpress, boardside backslide, frontflip, and fell again while doing an invert
    2    Sophie Reimers    GER
Front to blind, back mobe, front mobe, boardslide transfer (fall)
    3    Tor Young    UK
Heelside frontside 3, backside 1 to switch backside 1, roll to blind, boardslide and boardslide out, some inverts, blind judge, heelside frontside 3
    4    Denise De Haan    NL

Raley frontside 1, back mobe, ollie to boardslide on the slider, blind judge, heelside frontside 3.

Get you board groceries now

Today has been a great day so far, and the atmosphere at the shopping street is awesome. A lot of different brands are represented and everyone has got nice stuff in their tents. Check out all the brands who're represented at the shopping street here. We also had some interviews with Jobe and Teva, who are showcasing their newest stuff.

Meet Teva

Teva is all over the place here: they're one of the main sponsors of the Cable Call, well represented at the shopping street and they've got a Teva Blue Line Park (2.0 Cable System) at Down Under. We had a little chat with Ella Oesterholt about Teva and their new line of wakeskate shoes.

Ella, how are you doing?
Hi! I'm doing super good, there's a good atmosphere here at the shopping street. A lot of people are very stoked about the new collection, so we're really happy about that. I feel like I'm Living Better Stories here, haha!

What's up with all the new Teva products that have been coming out lately?
We've developed the Gnarkosi shoe, fully focused on wakeskating. Up till now, the wakeskaters were wearing their old sneakers when they went wakeskating, and we wanted to build a very technical wakeskate shoe. We decided to provide them with the best shoes we could give them. The roots of Teva are to be found in water and watersports ever since it started so it's in our genes, basically.

Tell us a bit about the Teva Blue Line Park Wake Playground that's located next to the cable here at Down Under. Are riders stoked about it?
It's like a cableway, but instead of having four or five corners, it's just one line and you go back and forth. We've got a lot of obstacles: a straight bar, uprail and a spine kicker. We're very happy to say we've got the first quarterpipe in Europe! We've been testing it and it's awesome, riders have to get used to it but when they do, they're loving it! The official announcement about the quarter pipe will be done tomorrow, so please don't tell anyone... and book the 2.0 system while it's not fully booked!

Then we ran off to book the 2.0 cable system for the coming weeks...

Nusport interview with Denise de Haan

Our friends at Nusport.nl have written a nice article about Denise de Haan. She's on top of her game, good luck in the finals!

Rocco needs his cable call

Rocco has been partying and is in need of a cable call. According to the schedule, he should be on his board at 11:30. Who is going to wake that boy up?

Our friends at Trick On get Spanish

Hola supermercado! Telebancos por aqui? Trick On has made a nice report in Spanish. We don't understand a word about it, but we're pretty stoked about it. So check out their report and take a look at their photos.

Good morning sir

No-one who was at the party last night will probably read this, since they're all a bit hung-over. But good morning folks! Currently we're filling up the lake with fresh new water from the sky, because the riders really ripped it up yesterday. We've ordered lots of sun today, and it should be arriving around 12 o'clock. So we'll see you at noon.

Paul Heijmink, THANKS!

Paul Heijmink from Houten just emailed us some really nice shots, thanks for that, Paul!

Tom Fooshee on his qualifying run

After his qualifying run, we spoke to Tom Fooshee. He's keeping his fingers crossed! We hope he can hold the handle bar while doing that, that would be awesome.

Sjors on his qualifying run

We talked to Sjors after his run, that ended up as his qualification run (so not his quarters, nor his semi's)

Jobe at the shopping street

Who's at the shopping street? Jobe's there! We had a chat with Henk van der Werf about the Cable Call, Jobe and the future of Jobe.

Hi Henk!
Hey guys, what's up? Enjoying the event?

Yes we are. Busy with all sorts of things... filming, blogging, interviewing, that kind of stuff. Err, wait. We're doing this backwards. We were supposed to interview you. What's up?
Yeah I'm good! It's very nice to be here at the Cable Call again. Lots of friendly people, lots of good brands at the shopping street. I like the way Protest improved the event this year by putting the shopping street on the far end of the lake, that's awesome. We have a lot of space, people are relaxing on this side of the lake, the view on the course is great. The only thing you can't control is the weather, all the rest has been taken care of by Protest. Holland may be proud of having an event like this. And we're proud of being one of the biggest partners!

I bet you're proud of the developments at Jobe, too! Tell us a bit about that.
We used to import JStar which are very technical boards, that was our high-end line. Jobe was the name for our standard line, which is more for mainstream wakeboarders. The brand JStar has come to an end, we're filling up the space they left behind by putting both lines together. We'll put it all out under one brand, Jobe. We're very stoked about our new products, because we've massively invested in our boards and bindings. The bindings have raised heel support, stronger eyelets, flex zones on the bindings, better overlays and a lot more improvements. In short, our products are more durable and they look a lot better, haha. We decided to create the best binding we can, so Jobe can get on top of the game in the wakeboard industry. And when you got Maxine, Sjors, Austin, Christian and other great riders in your team, we can be nothing but confident about that.

Weather forecast for Sunday

Thanks to Paddy who dropped this on Facebook! In the evening, make sure you get a roof over your head or put on your Protest Gore-tex jacket, because there will be some drips from the sky. Won't be a lot though.

Sunday night there will be some heavy rain unfortunately, but after ten o'clock the sky will clear up. Towards the end of the afternoon there might be some sun! Let's (s)pray!

Martijn and Mees

At the Cable Call, all sorts of people are walking around. We bumped into Martijn Oostdijk -event manager at the Dutch Ski Federation- and his son Mees, they were having a pretty good time at the shopping street.

Hi guys! What's up?
Mees: Good! I've been riding on the electroskate, which is a motorised mountainboard. That was fun! And have done a lot of fun stuff at the shopping street. I even won this cap so it's great! The only thing that I don't like is that I can't wakeboard now myself, when I see all those good riders I want to hit the water myself!

Maybe in a few years there'll be a grommet section for you. Martijn, you've organised multiple Dutch Championships in skiing and snowboarding. What do you think of the event so far?
The event is set up really nice, Down Under is a perfect location for it. They're making good use of the space available, as you can see with the placement of the shopping street, the beach, the party tent, everything. It's like this place was made for an event like this. There's also a lot to do for everyone, it's a great event even when you're not that hardcore incrowd in the board scene. That makes this an event for everyone.

You're well involved with the Dutch snowboard scene. Do you see the same vibe in the wakeboard scene?
I see that wakeboarding attracts a lot of boardminded people. It's a nice scene, a lot of people, a really good atmosphere. I like it a lot. Like in freestyle snowboarding, the riders are really supporting each other, instead of being really competitive they're hyping each other up and having them push their boundaries. They're helping each other to overcome their obstacles, haha!

At that time Mees attacked his dad and threw him to the ground, because Mees was in serious need of a Cornetto icecream. End of interview.

Chloe Goudie after her quali's

We spoke to Chloe again after her quarter final run at the Pro Women category, let's hear what she has to say about it!

Chloe Goudie, what's up?

We had a short chat with Chloe Goudie, one of the Protest riders competing at the Cable Call in the Pro Women division.

DJ Friss in the house!

We hope you're here to enjoy the event, so you notice the good music pumping out of the speakers. DJ Friss is providing everyone with fresh beats and catchy songs. He's main DJ of the Dutch upcoming rapper Kraantje Pappie, and has a masters degree at the University of Turntablism.

Hey Friss, what's up?
Hi! Yeah, I'm good. It's a bit early though, but it's nice here.

Let's get straight to your profession, turntablism. The art of scratching, dj-ing and mixing. What about turntablism in Holland?
Well, turntablism in Holland is on it's return. Not only in Holland, but worldwide. There are not a lot of people starting in turntablism these days, and the number of contests has decreased dramatically. Some time ago I enrolled in an online competition, kind of the Turntablism World Championships, and ended up in the finals! Check out the 6-minute routine here. I hope these competitions will give turntablism worldwide a new boost.

You're also well connected with Dutch hiphop label Noah's Ark, and are the live-DJ for rapper Kraantje Pappie. What kind of things you find important for DJ's who are performing with other artists?
I think it's important that the rapper leaves enough room for the DJ to do his thing. Sometimes you want to go out and freestyle, and the rapper has to kinda feel you and go with the flow when you do. And the DJ has to be sharp of course, on-point, skillful and have mastered the art of scratch. Until today, I think I'm doing a pretty good job at that, haha! Well, I have to fade out this beat and mix in a new one, so move!

Hey Nick! Last year you ended up at the second place at the Protest Cable Call. And had us discover your singing skills at the prize giving ceremony by singing a tribute to the plasma screen. Unfortunately, you messed up your knee last season. You've probably told this story a thousand times, sorry about asking you again, but could you tell us what happened?

Hey man! Yeah last year was a great event! The riding was sick and the cable and obstacles was good fun too! And the parties, haha! From last year October I torn my ACL in my left knee in Dubai while doing an innovational double Oakley contest, I was trying a double tantrum wake 2 wake and just came out short. It cased the top wake -landing on the peak of the wave- leaving my knee all tucked up and compressed, I felt it go straight away, I straightened my leg and I felt it all crack and pop back in to place! Was not fun, but now back to recovery and its coming along amazing, and nearly back on the water.

Good to hear you’ll be back on the water soon. Your injury started a discussion in the wakeboard community about the safety of the new binding system, a snowboard binding-like setup with an inner and outer shoe. Those sort of bindings can be strapped tighter than traditional bindings, but they seem to be less likely to come off your feet when you've crashed. What is your view on the discussion and the new binding system?
It had nothing to do with the boots I had on, it would have been the same if someone did it on a wakeskate, it was just a weird landing and casing the top wake is never good. The new Hyperlite system is by far the coolest and best fitting boot out there and is 100% the future, for the cable they’re perfect and great for walking back to the dock, comfort and support, I'll be using these from now on.

Thanks for clearing that up. When wakeboarding is your life, having an injury like that must be devastating. How did you cope with that?
It was hard for me to take it all in, soon as I did it, everything flashed in front of me, from years of riding and how lucky I have been, right there and then I was stunned and realized this is a year out and I need to think what to do. I had to stay positive and take everything one step at a time and I'll be back on the water in no time, never rushed any of it.

As you said you're on the road to recovery now. What are you doing these days to get your knee back into shape?
I've been training pretty much every day since January after my operation, been seeing my Physio every other week and doing lots of treatment on my knee. It’s been a lot of hard work, but now it’s paying off! I’ve been doing a lot of gym upper and lower body, so now I'm feeling even better than I was before I finished wakeboarding! So it’s fresh and I'm excited!

Have you been looking differently at life and wakeboarding after you got injured?
I see a lot of things different and in a way its good I've had this happen to me, I need a break to sort my riding out and push me a lot more, so now I'm fresh minded and can’t wait to ride and learn lots of new stuff! Also I’m going to do things different, look after my body a lot more and make sure I'm on top of things and never rushed!

Good to see you’ve learned valuable lessons from it and are looking forward to the future with such a positive attitude! How do you see the future?
This week I’m waiting for my knee brace to be fitted, then I can start wakeboarding again! I will start slowly and start learning all the basics again, take it one step at a time, and I'll be back doing contests in no time. I'll be heading away for the winter training somewhere and will make 2012 my come back year and start doing all the tours and events over the world, I want to retain my World Champion title again for next year! That is my goal.

Will we see you around at the Protest Cable Call this year?
I would love to be able to come over this year, but I still have a lot of things going on right now and need to be on top of it all before I start riding again. I wish you all a great event, just like last year, and can’t wait to see you all in the future! Thanks again and all the best!

Vergeet niet te winnen

Niks gewonnen bij onze eerste contest? Er is nog een kans! We geven 20 limited edition Protest Cable Call outfits weg.

Zin in?

Goed weer komt eraan!

Hey Maxine, what's up?
Hiya! Yeah, I'm doing great! My season so far was a bit less contest than last year. I had three cable contests since the beginning of this season: one pool Obstacle Only contest and two IWWF cable competitions for points and prize money. I’ve also been shooting with Protest and Jobe, two of my main sponsors. The shoots were held in Florida, USA and mainly we were riding at OWC, McCormicks and The Projects. Of course we did some lifestyle shoots, too. It was definitely a highlight of this season! I had loads of fun and it’s nice to get some good shots and video material again. Aside from wakeboarding, I’ve worked a bit here and there, had small jobs just to get a bit extra money haha… Besides that, I just wakeboard a lot and visit a lot of different cable parks to better my tricks and style.

Sounds like you’re having a really nice season! Let’s talk about last year, when you finished second at the Cable Call, just a few points behind Sophie Reimers. How do you look back on that result?
Well, of course I was a bit disappointed in myself. The Cable Call was held in Holland, my home country and sponsored by my main sponsor, so yeah I was pretty upset after that result. But I’m still happy, I mean I still became second out of fifteen women who were competing. I know what I can do and what tricks I can do, I just didn’t show it in the finals. I know I can’t really say this but I will anyway: I was first in qualifications and semi finals and the water was flat, but in the finals I guess it was also a bit the weather that changed my whole run, it was windy and the water was choppy and because of that I guess I was a bit afraid and I know myself: with wind I’m not at my best. During my run I hurt my shoulder which didn’t affect my run at that time, because of the adrenaline, but I still feel it nowadays. Anyway, having finished in second place last year will give me more boost to win it this year! I have another chance to beat Sophia!

Shannon Starling, president of the WWA, called you "hands-down the best woman on a wakeboard at the moment. Nobody can touch her." How does it feel to be in the international league of extraordinary ladies who compete on this level?
It’s amazing that people think that way about me! I really appreciate that. I’m not sure how to answer this question… I mean, I have achieved a lot in my eight seasons of riding, I’ve had a lot of titles and I won a lot of contests. I know I have big tricks and know my style of riding. People say I ride like a dude. I don’t care, to be honest I actually love it! It makes me different than all the other girls. In general, I’m just happy that people believe in me and my style of riding and are supporting it. It feels amazing to be loved in the sport like this!

You’ve already won a lot of titles as you said, and recently you won at Rixen 50th Anniversary in Munich, in the Open Ladies category. How did that feel?
I was so happy, I cannot describe how happy I was! My last season hasn’t been that good, I became seventh at IWWF worlds and second at the official Europeans, so basically lost those titles and that hasn’t happened since a long time. Also I have been beaten on the water by Sophia plenty of times last year. The event in Munich gave me such a boost, because I beat her and everyone and showed the world that I still know how to put down a killer run! I mean, I had 96 points and second place was Ange with 63 points, so the difference was huge.

That sounds awesome! While we’re discussing chicks on boards, can you say something about women in wakeboarding and how it develops?
The level of female wakeboarders nowadays is crazy. When I started doing air tricks back in 2006 I became Dutch, European and World champion of the girls. In the years that have passed, all these other women wakeboarders learn more every day. Nowadays everybody does a roll to blind, blind judges and killer spins of kickers. It’s crazy, every year they get better and better. I really like the way women ride these days, just to show the world that not only guys can ride, but us girls we rock and run the world!

Is there a different atmosphere when hanging out with wakeboard women then there is with wakeboard men? Or is it more or less the same vibe?
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a girl or boy, we all love wakeboarding so we're like one big family and just enjoying our lives with wakeboarding together. Atmosphere is the best in the world of wakeboarding, but I have to say there is a difference between boat riders and cable riders. But that has always been a difference I guess. Cable riding is more all together, you can look at each other on the water and dare each other on the water with tricks, and with a boat it’s always just one rider behind the boat.

We saw that you're doing a Clinic Tour across the cables of Holland. Could you tell us something about that?
That clinic tour basically came from Jobe. It was to promote my own pro model board and vest, the Jstar & Jobe Max Series! It’s been the second year I got my own pro model vest and board and I guess Jobe thought to do something different with it. We had some clinics all across Holland and it was a great success, a lot of people showed up and tried my board. Not just girls, but also boys who just liked my style and wanted to learn something from me. I love to hear that and love to teach people and that they actually listen to what I have to say and then a few minutes later you see them doing new tricks because I taught them how to do it. It gives me a great feeling to give people that information and have them learn from my experience. Spread the wakeboarding to the new people! As for the future I'd love to keep teaching, not just clinics, but anywhere in the world people can ask me to help them out and I would be happy to help them out!

That’s nice! You pulled off a crazy victory run in Munich, when you already knew you would be first. How was that like and what trick felt best?
Like I said I beat all those girls with such a score difference. I think that was one of my best runs ever landed! At that point, I already knew I won so I guess the pressure was gone and I landed all my best tricks: switch mobius, whirly off the kicker, s bend to blind, backroll to blind, switch heelside 540 off the kicker. I'm just proud of myself that I did it and showed everyone my skills on the water and I got a lot of applause afterwards and loads of compliments about my s to blind so yeah, maybe that’s the one tricks I’m most proud of!

Sounds promising. What kind of tricks have you been working on lately? Have you got any surprises left for us at the Cable Call?
I mainly try to get my strength back and all my old tricks back. I am practicing at the same time. I guess you should not expect anything new but yeah, you never know what happens… I guess you guys just have to wait and see.

We’ll be paying attention when you hit the water. Any last words?
I'M BACK! AND GOING WITH THE FLOW!

Lenny Keylard

Lenny Keylard is dé Nederlandse Reggae zanger.

Hey Lenny, what's up? What have you been up to these days?
I’ve been quite a busy man! These days I'm fully focused on my new study, I’m studying for master cast to fix broken arms and legs in the hospital. I'm working 32 hours a week in the cast room. In the weekend I usually have gigs and play my music, and when I find some time I love to sport, like soccer, kitesurfing, running, that stuff.

Busy boy! Your brand new album "Jah is the Remedy, Love is the Cure" has just landed on the shelves in the record shops. What are your expectations of this album?
I don't really have expectations. I think it’s great to create something that’s on your mind and heart, and I want to let the world know what I think and get people to enjoy themselves with my music. All songs on the album have been written by me, except for the song Baby Get Higher. But I think it’s a funny song and sort of like a small tribute to my coach in the TV show.

has put you -and reggae- in the spotlights. You're one of the few artists in Holland who managed to put reggae back on the map in Holland, through the Dutch talent show The Voice of Holland. How do you look back on that experience?
It was fun to do, except for the whole TV stuff. I don't like the camera's and the interviews much, but hey, it’s part of the game. It provided me with a chance to let the people know what reggae is. The Voice of Holland brought me a lot, because it gave me the opportunity to get my album in the record shops and now I can play more music with my band. And let the people enjoy a little bit of reggae again!

Your songs have a very positive vibe. What is the message you want to spread with your music?
I want people to understand that it’s important to enjoy life, because there’s so much trouble in the world. People need to reflect on that, be aware that terrible things happen, so they can truly feel we are blessed with the life we live. And if I can only help just a bit by writing my songs and making music, then I’m feeling good!

In the music video of your single “It's You” we see you riding on a longboard. It's not a secret you're into snowboarding as well. Have you ever been on a wakeboard?
Hahaha yeah, I’ve been on a wakeboard before, but it was difficult because I was standing on my kitesurf board. I lost my board a ton of times, because there are no bindings on a kitesurf board, only straps... Every time I tried to jump and get some airtime, I lost my board! That was kinda frustrating, but I do love the sport. So if there are no wind or waves, you can find me wakeboarding!

Are you looking forward to perform at the Protest Cable Call?
For sure! I hope the people will enjoy the show and have a good time. The band is very excited about this gig, and we can’t wait to play there. So let the good times roll!

Wie is Tom fooshee?

Altijd enthousiast. Helaas voor jullie in het engels…

Hi Tom! What's up, how are you doing?
What up Protest? Just kickin' it right here at home in New Braunfels TX getting ready for the Cable Call this year. Lately I have been traveling pretty non stop. Been in Canada for two weeks for both the WWA Wake Park Triple Crown stop and the Monster Team trip on Lake Shuswap in British Columbia. So epic.

Nice! Last year you ended up #1 at the Protest Cable Call. Won the WWA Wake Park World Series last year. For the third time. In a row. And you've got the Ultimate Wake Championship Overall Award for the second year in a row. That's awesome. How do you look back on the past years, being top dawg in the international wakeboard scene?
Looking back on the past year's have left me with such a thankful presence. To be crowned all those titles is just an amazing experience. But I do have to say, my old body isnt slowing down yet so there is still much more to be earned.

That sounds very promising. Are there any particular things you want to achieve in wakeboarding?
There are plenty of challenges left for me. I definitely want to keep continuing to earn as many titles as I can to one day become a legend in our sport. I want to keep progressing the sport by submitting new moves for the Transworld Trick of the year at the Wake Awards. I also want to keep working with my sponsors so that we can keep developing the best products on the market. So there is still much more to be accomplished.

Progressing the sport by inventing new tricks, hmm... have you been working on new tricks lately?
I most definitely got some new tricks and other things up my sleeve. Some riders saw some of it at the first stop, but there is plenty more to come. You will just have to wait 'til the Cable Call to find out. You might even see me down there with a camera getting some shots of everyone else too...

Sounds good! I see a pattern here. You're inventing new tricks, you're very succesful in the sport... you're like the Shaun White of wakeboarding. When is your arcade game coming out?
Ahahaha, I wish I could be compared to him. That dude is unreal, such an inspiration. No arcade game coming out soon, but I can definitely teach everyone some really cool drinking games! Haha!

We'll save that for Saturday night! One last question. You've traveled all over the world to compete in all sorts of wakeboarding contests. How do you look back on last year's Protest Cable Call in Holland?
Holland was incredible last year. The people were awesome, the cables were fun, the food was great. The event went off, I mean what else more could you ask for?

Good point. We can't come up with an answer to that! We have no further questions, your honor. Any last words?
Thanks to all of my sponsors and come say what up to me at this years Cable Call at the Down Under Cableway!
